When shipping by sea you have two main choices: FCL (Full Container Load), where you book a whole container, and LCL (Less than Container Load), where your cargo shares a container with other shippers.
When LCL makes sense
LCL is usually the better option for smaller shipments, typically under 13-15 CBM. You only pay for the space you use, which keeps costs down when volumes are low.
- Lower total cost for small volumes
- Ideal for testing new products
- More frequent, smaller orders
When FCL makes sense
Once your cargo approaches half a 20-foot container, FCL often becomes cheaper per unit. It is also faster, because there is no consolidation at origin or deconsolidation at destination, and your goods are handled less.
