Space on an aircraft is limited, so airlines charge by chargeable weight: the higher of the actual gross weight and the volumetric (dimensional) weight.

Calculating volumetric weight

Volumetric weight (kg) = L × W × H (cm) ÷ 6000

A carton measuring 60 × 40 × 40 cm has a volumetric weight of 16 kg. If it actually weighs 10 kg, you pay for 16 kg.

How to reduce it

  • Use right-sized cartons to cut empty space
  • Avoid oversized packaging and fillers
  • Consolidate small parcels into fewer cartons

Our CBM calculator shows both volumetric and chargeable weight instantly.
